Courses in L&S Natural Science programs numbered 300 or above automatically count towards the L&S Advanced Natural Science requirement.

L&S Natural Sciences programs include:

  • Actuarial Science (ACTSCI)
  • Astronomy (ASTRON)
  • Biological Sciences (BIO SCI)
  • Chemistry and Biochemistry (CHEM)
  • Geosciences (GEO SCI)
  • L&S Natural Sciences (L&S NS)
  • Mathematical Sciences (MATH)
  • Mathematical Statistics (MTHSTAT)
  • Physics (PHYSICS)

Courses numbered 300 or above in the following areas also fulfill the L&S Advanced Natural Science requirement:

  • Conservation and Environmental Sciences (CES) (excluding CES 461)
  • Freshwater Sciences (FRSHWTR) (only through 2009)

Courses numbered 300 or above in Atmospheric Science may fulfill the L&S Advanced Natural Science requirement with the following conditions:

  • For all students, Atmospheric Science courses numbered 300 or above taken before Fall 2022 count as L&S Advanced Natural Sciences.
  • For students who declared the major in Atmospheric Science before Fall 2022, or took ATM SCI 240 before Fall 2022 and later declared the major in Atmospheric Science, Atmospheric Science courses numbered 300 or above taken in Fall 2022 or later may count toward the L&S Advanced Natural Sciences requirement.

Other courses fulfilling the L&S Advanced Natural Science requirement are listed below.

Some courses that fulfill the L&S Natural Science requirement have also been approved to fulfill university General Education Requirements (GER). The Code Key below provides the GER designations.

*Courses noted with a GER Distribution designation can fulfill both the L&S Breadth and GER requirements only for students following degree requirements through Summer 2024. Students under the Fall 2024 degree requirements and later terms may not use one course to fulfill both the L&S Breadth and GER Distribution requirements; an individual course may satisfy only the L&S Breadth or GER Distribution. For more information on L&S degree requirements visit the L&S website.
